Het Wad Op – Bezinken

A Film by Tim Visser und Sander van Iersel

This film is part of Het Wad Op, a series of short documentaries exploring the relationship between humans and the Wadden Sea region.

The series delves into how human activity often clashes with the natural dynamics of this unique landscape. What can the land teach us? Will we keep going against the flow, or will we start moving along with the natural rhythm of the Wadden?
The episode Bezinken (Drowning) explores how gas drilling quite literally pulls the ground out from under millions of migratory birds. We follow a scientist investigating its impact on the ecosystem, and an activist determined to push for change.

Sander van Iersel:

“There’s no topic I can’t get fascinated about. This hunger for new perspectives and ideas led me to the science of biology and the natural world because it is full of inspiration. I love science for its unyielding drive of discovery and putting questions front and center. In my work on factual documentaries and television I stimulate that scientific inquiry and quest to know more. For me, people and their motivation make stories powerful.

I want to be taken along and have my world flipped upside down.”

Tim Visser:

“I have always been fascinated by the world around me. Its processes, light, and wildness have constantly fueled my creativity. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between humans and nature. The magic of filmmaking gives me the freedom to capture stories that offer a new perspective on the world we live in. I am most grateful when I can use my filmmaking skills to tell stories that create real impact.

As a filmmaker Tim has a long history in visual storytelling. His work has been seen in international cinema-released films, television programs and at numerous prestigious international film festivals
