Croatia's coastline – Endless and wild

A Film by Christine Sonvilla, Marc Graf

It is a sensual world, with paradisiacal bays, steep cliffs, mighty coastal mountains and picturesque villages nestled among gardens, vineyards and olive groves – some of them hundreds of years old. The Croatian coast is considered a dream destination by millions of people worldwide. But away from the beaches – and sometimes even in the middle of them – there is a world that remains hidden from most visitors: over 1,000 islands and more than 6,000 kilometres of coastline offer not only scenic diversity, but also plenty of space for unexpected animal inhabitants. This film brings the surprisingly wild, often hidden natural wonders of the Croatian coast to the big screen with remarkable imagery.

The stars of the Croatian coast are the griffon vultures of Kvarner Bay – they are among the few vultures worldwide that nest on steep cliffs directly above the sea. The film shows them in previously unseen footage and impressively shines a light on these often misunderstood birds of prey.

Other animals also surprise us: the amphibious blenny fish, which lives in the intertidal zone between two worlds; nimble geckos, which hunt in the hustle and bustle of busy places; and the singing cicadas, which shape the sound of the Mediterranean summer year after year. Unmistakable, yet overlooked by most. This impressive nature documentary spans from the colourful underwater world to the exposed ridges of the imposing Velebit Mountains – home to chamois, lynx and brown bears.

However, the gently sparkling coastline is also shaped by natural forces such as storms and thunderstorms – fuelled by the Mediterranean heat. And it is precisely the sun, which attracts millions of tourists every year, that is increasingly throwing the region off its delicate balance. Croatia's coastline may seem eternal and timeless, but nature never stands still – not even in a holiday paradise.

This film is a declaration of love for a wild coastline, shaped by light, wind and waves, which celebrates the beauty and power of nature.
