Noiseless
Human noise is reshaping the lives of animals in ways we, humans, rarely notice. A squirrel loses her warning system, a robin sings in the dark, and sudden human activity throws a bank vole off balance. Their instincts are disrupted, and survival strategies are pushed to the limit.
Noiseless reveals this unseen battle. A film about the impact of human noise, told through the eyes of wildlife navigating an increasingly noisier world.
Director Statement
The idea for Geruisloos (Noiseless) was sparked by a podcast featuring Professor Slabbekoorn, who explained the negative effects of anthropogenic sound on wildlife. I had never truly considered how everyday human noise, something so normal to us, could have such a profound impact on animals. That realization stayed with me, and I knew this was a story that needed to reach a wider audience.
What makes this film unique is its multi-species approach within the short film format. Instead of focusing on a single subject, Geruisloos (Noiseless) follows three different species, each dealing with the consequences of human-made sound in their own way. Filming took place both during the day and at night, and I took on the challenge of capturing elusive species such as martens and bank voles. Animals that are rarely seen.
