As a bird warden, Kilian Helmbrecht spends seven months alone on a North Sea island, observing wildlife and collecting flotsam – surrounded by a soundscape of wind, rain and birdsong. Encounters with other people are rare. This makes the outside world all the more poignant for Kilian: whilst climate change threatens the island, he receives news from his relatives in war-torn Lebanon – and the island becomes a mirror of far greater crises.
