Pyrenees – Eye to Eye With the Bear
A Film by Sandrine Mörch
The brown bear was once almost extinct in the forests of the Pyrenees; today – thanks to a government-led reintroduction programme 30 years ago – there are once again around 100 bears there. Although the bears form part of the local people’s identity, they also cause discontent. Shepherds, in particular, are concerned for their livestock. The film gives a voice to bear conservationists and scientists, as well as local residents and livestock farmers, who are striving to gain understanding for their respective viewpoints.
